ECHOMAX

Concerned about the performance of radar reflectors John Firth spent forty years of his life improving their design. As a member of the ISO committee in Paris in 1980, considering amendments to Marine Radar Reflectors Regulations, John drafted performance paragraphs subsequently incorporated into ISO 8729. He obtained three patents and was one of the founder members of Firdell Multi Flectors and his first patent was used in the Blipper-210-7. His second patent was an improved design which was sold as the Gillie-Firth for 30 years. In 1998 we purchased John Firths third patent which was a revolutionary design of the stacked array principle and called the product Echomax.
For many years the Octahedral reflector has been accepted as the basis for the ISO 8729, RORC and ORC specification. However, at a 15° tilt its serious failings are a lack of response over 140° azimuth. “Comparing Echomax to other reflectors is like comparing a car headlight with a candle in a jar.”

RADAR REFLECTORS – RIGID, PASSIVE:

EM180
has a documented maximum radar cross section of 8M2 and is suitable for vessels up to 7-8 metres. We have utilised the largest possible patented symmetrical stacked array with the smallest possible robust Polyethylene case with minimum windage and weight. The EM180 is suitable for deck, mast mount fixing, or halyard suspension and is available in white, orange or yellow. Used extensively on marine buoys and for tsunami warning buoys.

EM230
Suitable for vessels 9 metres and above. Robust Polyethylene case available in white, orange, yellow, red, green, or black. . The EM230 model has been successfully tested by QinetiQ to ISO 8729-1999, and meets RORC,ORC,ISAF 2012/13 and WCC requirements of 10M2.
Echomax EM230 has now been allocated a NATO Stock No.5840-99-742-6193 following the adoption and use of the Echomax EM230 by the UK Military Forces and others throughout the World. Used by the US Navy for target and other uses.
The EM230 has Ships Wheel Mark certification for life boats and rescue craft as from December 2012 and copies of the BABT- TUV Module B certificate can be seen and downloaded from the Certificates section of this website.

EM230 Midi
The medium sized Echomax radar reflector with a maximum 20M2 radar cross section is suitable for 8-15 metres sailing yachts – see photos of this being suspended from the spreaders by Arc rally entrants at Las Palmas -RIBs and motor cruisers. Suitable for mast, deck bracket or halyard suspension. Fully tested by QinetiQ. Exceeds RORC/ORC/WCC/ISAF requirement of 10M2.

EM230 Compact
Adapted from the very successful big brother with high response of 8.3M2. Suitable for 6-9 metre fast fishing boats, solves the problem where to fit the radar reflector and the light.

Lalizas DOT all round navigation light (illustrated) or Tri-colour light supplied with 4M of cable.
Hella LED 360 all round white supplied certified by RINA/USCG/IMO/NMMA to 2nm with 1M cable

EM230 BASEMOUNT
EM230 basemount suitable for direct installation on wheel house roofs, RIB A frames, marker buoys. Robust four hole base fixing and supplied with fixing kit comprising of spacers to avoid over tightening and neoprene washers to absorb the shock of crashing down on waves at speed.
Chosen by the RNLI as best reflector for their fleet of 400 RIB’s. After capsize tests and exhaustive sea trials, the Midi recorded 100% paints at 3.8 miles and 80% paints at 5 miles plus in sea state ‘fair’ although mounted only 2m above sea level. (RORC/ORC recommend 4m above sea level).
Available with optional factory fitted Lalizas DOT all round white or tri-colour navigation and four meters of cable or Hella LED 360 navigational all white light with 1 meter of cable – just bolt on and wire up!

Rod Kit for EM230i/EMA03i
ROBUST FIXING KIT – Three piece 60cm tapered glass fibre kit specially manufactured for Echomax for mounting their SOLAS inflatable ball reflector EMA03i or tubular EM230i on life rafts.
“The maximum range a radar reflector can be detected at is seriously affected by the height it is mounted at due to wave obscuration and the curvature of the Earth, we, in common with the UK MCA’s Marine Notice 1481 recommend a minimum height of 1.5m above sea level to the lowest part of the reflector element. To this aim we provide a three piece fibreglass pole set that can be mounted in the antenna socket on many liferafts”
Liferafts are invisible to searching radar as the only reflective item is the cylinder which is in the base of the raft and hidden by the waves – A liferaft fitted with an Echomax EMA03i SOLAS inflatable ball reflector was detected by a Norwegian search helicopter at 4nm

State of the Art Echomax Active-XS-Dual Band Radar Target Enhancer with minuscule current draw of 23mA on stand by and very high X and S band response many times the new ISO 8729-2 standard. Unique visual facility to identify S or X Band Radar paints. Quadruple alarm facility as standard.
The Active-XS amplifies and returns a stronger signal and these high responses to both X or S Band Radar increase the likelihood of improving your vessels radar cross section and helps to alert oncoming vessels of your position and detection especially in poor conditions and thereby reduces the risk of collision.

Echomax Active-X
With increasingly limited space at the mast head and the ensuing distant horizon and suitable mounting options free from shadowing or adjacent large metal objects suspension from the cross trees, spreaders or back stays for the Echomax Active RTE goes a long way to solve the problem. Free suspension from the two back stays in most cases allows compensation by the bottom attachment from heel thus retaining most of the 112M2 Stated performance level whilst the vessel is at heel.
The RTE must not be subjected to winch pressure and cable secured to avoid chaffing. Each RTE is supplied with 24M of cable as standard, if additional cable is required please let us now when ordering. Careful consideration should be given to evaluate if this mounting option is suitable to your rig and use.
