What is AIS?:
The automatic identification system (AIS) is an automatic tracking system used for collision avoidance on ships. Information provided by AIS equipment, such as unique identification, position, course, and speed is transmitted by a VHF antenna to the surrounding vessels equipped with an AIS equipment.
• The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is the biggest advance in marine navigation since RADAR
• AIS uses GPS, VHF and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to communicate data between vessels
• Vessels can Transmit their position and Receive other vessel’s positions (Transponder) or just Receive other vessel’s positions (Receiver)
• An AIS transponder is a mandatory fit on all vessels greater than 300 tonnes or carrying 12 or more passengers
What AIS Does
• There are two classes of AIS;
• Class A – for mandated commercial vessels
• Class B – for smaller non-mandated vessels
• At regular intervals based on AIS class,navigational status and speed, a transponder will transmit the vessel’s;
• GPS Position, SOG and COG
• Heading and Rate of Turn
• MMSI number
• Every 6 minutes, a transponder will transmit the vessel’s “Static Data”;
• Vessel Name, Call Sign and MMSI; Dimensions and Vessel Type; Voyage Data (Destination/ETA); Navigational Status
Types of AIS
Class A Transponder – Mandatory Fit on large commercial vessels; Transmits and Receives; Dedicated type approved “Minimum Keyboard+Display” (MKD)
Class B Transponder – Lower cost transponder for leisure and non-mandated craft; Transmits and Receives; Normally a “black box” solution
AIS Receiver – Cost effective way for small craft to see “big ships”; Only Receives; Normally a “black box” solution.

The marine GPS sesnor has either an NMEA0183 or USB output.

Understand NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000
NMEA is the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) is a US-based marine electronics trade organisation setting standards of communication between marine electronics. There are currently two main standards: NMEA0183 and NMEA2000.
Thus, NMEA allow different instruments and marine electronics products to communicate between each other. NMEA0183 is an old standard created by the NMEA association, but it is now being replaced by the new standard called NMEA2000. However, NMEA0183 still is the main standard.
NMEA0183 is the most frequent standard on board and almost every marine electronic system has an NMEA0183 input and output. However, there is also different NMEA speeds which you may need to know:
4800 baud is the lowest NMEA speed and is the most used especially by chart plotter, GPS antenna, marine instruments, etc.
38400 baud is mainly used by AIS systems such as AIS transponder, AIS receiver, etc.
115200 baud is the highest NMEA speed and is mostly used by racing boat to obtain a quick update of navigation data.
Knowing the different NMEA speeds is important when connecting and linking different marine electronics products. Although most of the new marine electronics products use the new NMEA2000 standard, they almost always keep an NMEA0183 connectivity.
The NMEA association created this new standard due to the increasing number of marine electronic products on board and thus having more instruments to communicate between each other. It is a very easy plug-and-play communications standard. Most of marine electronic products directly take their power from the NMEA2000 network. The main goal of this standard is to increase the communication speed between marine electronics products and also to facilitate the installation of marine electronics products.

NMEA to Wi-Fi adaptor – all products to send the boat data (NMEA) to the tablets, PCs and smartphones.
NMEA interface – All Digital Yacht NMEA interfaces products such as the NMEA-Signal K gateway or the NMEA-Ethernet gateway.
Internet on Board:
Digital Yacht’s boat internet solutions as our long Range Wi-Fi antenna that extend the Wi-Fi connection range of your laptop, tablet or phone from typically 20-30m up to anywhere between 1-6 miles (depending upon conditions). The marine Wi-Fi antennas easily pick up the hotspot on shore and are also easy to install. Digital Yacht wireless routers allow to share the internet connection obtained by a Wi-Fi antenna with all the mobile devices, PC, etc. The iNavHub marine wifi router can also combine and stream wirelessly the NMEA data, allowing your mobile devices and PCs to receive navigation data (NMEA0183) whilst receiving internet data.
