Lifejackets
Manual or Automatic?
Manual Lifejackets:
- Don't inflate automatically if submerged in water
- Don't inflate automatically if you fall overboard - you need to pull the firing cord.
Automatic Lifejackets
- Inflate automatically if you fall overboard (a good idea if you want to protect against drowning if falling overboard unconcscious)
- Can self inflate if a wave comes over the boat - ie when not needed to.
Ocean Safety Kru ISO Lifejackets
Kru XS - crutch strap is extra, standard horseshoe lifejacket with 175N
buoyancy (exceeds minimum of 150N). A low cost horseshoe type
lifejacket which exceeds minimum specifications by a wide margin.
Kru Professional - crutch strap included. Also included is a spray hood
which if you ever have to wear a lifejacket in anger is a damn good
idea. Lifejackets has 160N of buoyancy. Horseshoe type more comfortable
to wear than the XS
Kru Sports Pro - crutch strap included. Spray hood as well and spray
hood is deployable without inflating the lifejacket (damn good idea).
Also waist band can be adjusted in the water which is unique, and the
whole design of the lifejacket is done to make sure the weight of the
jacket when worn uninflated is taken on the shoulders rather than the
neck like all other lifejackets. This means that you are much more
likely to have it on (loose waist band, easily adjustable, does not give
you a stiff neck) as it is easily the most comfortable lifejacket
around which makes it perhaps the best lifejacket in the world: after
all a lifejacket which is not on is indeed useless!
I have a Sports Pro for myself. For the crew I bought XS jackets and told
them where to buy a Sports Pro (!) Many customers purchase the Pro
version because they want the built in spray hood but do not want to go
to the expense of the Sports Pro.
