Fasteners, Pad Eyes and Shackles
Fasteners are the many and varied metal things that connect the rigging to the boat. They include pad-eyes, u-bolts, saddles, straps, fairleads and eye bolts, to which might be attached in turn blocks, shackles and swivels, or even free-running ropes.
Pad eyes are eyelets, rings, or loops and can be used for tie-down, or lashing. There are
many different types of pad eyes. Folding pad eyes
can be used for either temporary or permanent attachment. Because the
bails fold down, the angle of applied load prevents bending. Eye straps
have flared edges and are available in many different mounting styles.
